Prof. Sebastian Björklund
Prof. Sebastian Björklund
Biofilms Research Centre for Biointerfaces, Malmö University - Sweden

Sebastian Björklund is professor in Biophysical Chemistry at Malmö University, Sweden, and director of the Biofilms Research Centre for Biointerfaces since 2026. He obtained his MSc in Analytical Chemistry and PhD in Physical Chemistry from Lund University and has since established his research at the interface between physical chemistry and biomedical science.

His research focuses on the biophysical properties of the skin barrier, with the aim of linking molecular-level mechanisms to macroscopic barrier function. In particular, his work addresses how skin hydration, topical formulations, and excipients influence permeability and structure of the stratum corneum. A central aspect of his research is the use of electrical impedance spectroscopy as a non-invasive technique to probe and quantify skin barrier function, often in combination with complementary methods targeting molecular structure and dynamics. In recent years, his research has expanded toward non-invasive skin sampling and biomarker analysis, as well as the development of materials designed to enhance skin permeability and improve sampling efficiency. His work also includes methodological development for studying hydration-dependent changes in biological systems.

Biovotec develops wound-healing medical devices based on its proprietary PEP® (Purified Eggshell Membrane Protein) technology. These proteins are extracted from the membrane of the eggshell and form a bioactive matrix. The matrix recreates an environment that supports tissue regeneration, even in hard-to-heal chronic wounds. The technology comes in two products: DermaRep® for human wound care, and RegeVet® for animal wounds, already authorized for sale to veterinary clinics across Europe.

Founded in Norway, Biovotec is organized around Biovotec AS, the Norwegian parent company, and its subsidiaries Biovotec France and Biovotec DAC (Ireland). As co-founder and CTO, Henri-Pierre leads R&D, clinical studies, production under an ISO 13485 quality system, and international registrations, notably in Malaysia and the Middle East.
